Music at Brookview
Music at Brookview School is more of a way of life than a curriculum. Our philosophy is that music, with its endless possibilities for self-expression and enjoyment, should be woven into the child's life on a daily basis.
Listen to the Brookview Song performed by Brookview students.
Our goal is for each child to experience music on a personal and a community level and to become familiar with the folk, popular, and classical music of the world's cultures.
To accomplish these goals, we prepare the environment in such a way that students can cultivate musical skills within the context of their whole curriculum.
The philosophical direction of the music program can be summed up in three simple points.
- First, the curriculum emphasizes self-expression and strives to empower students as creative artists.
- Music becomes a vehicle by which children interact with their friends and community by singing together, playing together, or listening and learning together.
- The study of the world's music supports perhaps the most important Montessori principle of all- that of global awareness and respect, which might very well lead us, someday, to a more peaceful existence.
In addition to class time that is devoted solely to music, musical elements are integrated into diverse array of disciplines, including literature, cultural studies, mathematics, and technology.
We also strive to illuminate hidden musical talent. Piano lessons are available for students beginning at age four, and beginning in the Upper Elementary, students have the opportunity to meet one on one with the music teacher for Creative Studio Time in order to pursue independent musical projects, such as composing songs, working with percussion instruments, or learning to play a blues progression on the piano.
